Frequently Asked Questions
CYS offers a Preparatory Orchestra (coming Fall 2026) for beginning string students. In 2025/26 LCSD1 discontinued their 3rd and 4th grade orchestra program, which has greatly diminished the instruction and level of music students are able to achieve. CYS is filling this critical gap with a Preparatory Orchestra. Stay tuned for more information!
The Prelude Symphony requires an audition and is for emerging string students with a few years of playing experience.
The Cadenza Symphony requires an audition and is made up of intermediate string students.
CYS is made up of students from 3rd-9th grades.
The CYS season spans from September through early June. During the season rehearsals are 1 hour every Tuesday night. Members may also opt into the summer program that performs at Cheyenne Frontier Days parades and at community care facilities.
CYS schedules four required annual performances—a fall concert, a holiday concert, a spring concert, and an end of season tea and concert (the only ticketed performance.)
Members may also choose to play in multiple community opportunities. Examples include lobby music for the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, a fund raiser at Barnes & Nobles, and a menorah lighting at the Wyoming State Capitol.
The annual membership dues are $125.
All students have a fundraising requirement of $100, and an additional fundraising challenge of $150, for a total annual fundraising goal of $250.
Dues may be paid via cash, check, Venmo, or PayPal.
Uniforms will be provided with your membership dues. They are required for performances.
It takes a lot of work to keep the Cheyenne Youth Symphony going and able to offer the great experiences made available to your students. Parents are required to volunteer on one or more committee to help with a variety of tasks with rehearsals, concerts, equipment organization, etc.
